What You Can Do With A Little Of Our Help!
1 Stop Smoking
It has been proven beyond any doubt that smoking can cause severe illness and death. The single most important thing any smoker can do for their own health (and those around them) is to kick the habit. If you need advice on how to stop, make an appointment with either your doctor or one of our nurses for some helpful advice and encouragement.

2 Lose Weight
Many people are heavier than their 'ideal weight' and know they would feel better if they weighed less. But trying to shed those extra pounds is not so easy in practice.
To assist and encourage you in this endeavour, we can arrange for you to be seen by a dietician.
Remember, 'you are what you eat' and that how much you eat is as important if not more so than what you eat.
3 Take Exercise
Regular exercise is of benefit to you; whilst for most of us the London Marathon is an unrealistic aim, a brisk walk at least once a day, or a swim two or three times a week will pay great dividends.
'Winners Team' is an exercise programme which promotes a more active and healthier lifestyle. A free health and information service for Denbighshire residents.

4 Limit Alcohol
Some alcohol consumption does no harm, but you should aim to keep your alcohol consumption at no more than 21 units in a week for a man, or 14 units for a woman. (One unit = half a pint of beer, one glass of wine, one measure of spirit.)
MOST IMPORTANTLY - NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE.
What We Can Do With A Little Of Your Help!
1 Cervical Cytology - Never Fear To Have A
Smear
We recommend that all women between the ages of 20 and 65
should have a simple test called a cervical smear at least every three years. An
appointment for this can be made with either one of our doctors or nurses, as
part of a well woman check. Our computer will send a letter to you every three
years to remind you to make an appointment.
2
Blood Pressure
Every patient over the age of 25 years should have
their blood pressure checked every three years. If you come to a well person clinic,
please bring a urine specimen so that we can check this. We will also check your
weight.
3 Cholesterol (Lipid) Testing
Those patients under 65 years who suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart
disease, or who have a strong family history of premature heart disease, should
consider this simple blood test, which can be arranged either by the doctor or
practice nurse. If your cholesterol is raised, simple dietary advice could be
sufficient to reduce your risk of a heart disease.
4
Immunisation
All adults should have a tetanus immunisation booster every 10 years - any of our doctors or practice nurses will
perform this for you.
Each autumn we hold our influenza immunisation campaign. We hold regular clinics and invite all patients over 65 years and those with diabetes, coronary heart or respiratory disease or certain other chronic illnesses to have this immunisation.
Patients over 65 or those younger who are at risk should have a pneumonia vaccination. Please discuss this with your doctor.
CHILD
AND MATERNITY SERVICES
Antenatal
Clinics
All doctors hold weekly antenatal clinics with a midwife.
Please ask for an appointment for your own doctor's clinic.
Contraception
All doctors offer a full range of contraceptive services including
oral contraception and coil fitting.
Postnatal
And Childhood Immunisation
We request that you and your baby attend
your doctor eight weeks after the birth so that a full postnatal examination can
be performed on you and your child's first injection given. All subsequent injections
can then be given by either the doctor or health visitor.
The following
is the schedule for child immunisations which we give in the practice:

You should receive a postcard prior to your child's immunisation, but if you don't, please contact the surgery when your child is the appropriate age. We strongly recommend that your child is immunised against all these diseases. If you have any concerns regarding vaccination, do not hesitate to discuss them either with your doctor or health visitor.
Child
Health Surveillance
We hold a child health clinic run by Dr Wares, Dr Campbell and Dr Morrison. Health visitors are also present to offer advice on any matters of baby care that might concern you. A periodical examination is carried out at between six and eight weeks of age. You will receive a written invitation prior to this.
DISEASE PREVENTION
Well Person Clinics/Appointments
If you are in good health, but feel in need of a 'general check up', you should make an appointment for this with a practice nurse. This appointment will include a cervical smear for women if necessary. You should bring a urine specimen with you.
Travel Immunisation Clinic
This clinic takes place each week. If you need advice on immunisation prior to travelling, please make an appointment for this clinic at least two months in advance of your likely travel date.
It is an individual's responsibility to ensure that they have adequate travel insurance. You must ensure that you have notified your travel insurance company of all your current medical illnesses, otherwise your insurance will not be valid.
DISEASE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES
We run specific disease management programmes for the following problems:
Asthma
Diabetes
Hypertension
COPD
Heart Disease
The times for these are shown in the health promotion activities timetable. If
you wish to have an appointment for any of these problems our receptionist will
only be too pleased to arrange this with a doctor or nurse.
MINOR SURGERY
On Thursday mornings, Dr Jessup/Dr Scriven carry out minor surgery sessions for a variety of minor ailments. You should see your own doctor for advice on whether any ‘lump or bump’ is suitable for dealing with in this session.
Dr Phillips and Dr Popat also perform some procedures during ordinary appointment times.
CLINICS IN GENERAL
With so many doctors, nurses and other attached staff, health promotion clinics
are liable to change from time to time. If this happens we will attach an addition
to our practice booklet giving updated times, but information provided is correct
as of September 2008.
